JAN 1 1894 :- The Dickson Experimental sound filim was the first film with live record sound .Recorded at Thomas Edison’s Black Maria
1899 :- The Cinemachrophonograph, also known as the phonorama,was displayed for use in paris.
1919 :- Lee De Forest patented several devices that would lead to the first optical sound on film technology with commercial application .Lee DeForest figured out how to photographically record the sound onto the side of the filim strip to create a composite print.
1921 :- Oralando kellum developed a sound on disc system called the Photokinema .He used it to add sound sequences to a silent film by DW Griffith
1923 (April 15) The Rivoli THeater in New york city were the first to commercially screen motion pictures with a sound -on filim ,playing a set of short filims
1928 :-The first all-talking cartoon short, Paul Terry’s Dinner Time eith synchronized sound was premiered preceding Disney’s steamboat Willie by about a month
1930s :- The end of silent movie stars’ carrers like Rudolph valentino ,John Gilbert ,Lon chaney,Charli Chaplin,Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford, Tom Mix, Roscoe ‘Fatty’ Arbuckle, Jackie coogan and Lillian Gish
1937 :- Multi-channel sound was the state of the art and disney’s crew literally invented stereo sound
1952 Cinerama – Hi Fidelity stereo sound in the cinema in the form of Fred Waller’s Cinerama system
1953 :- Instead of specail optical tracks cinemascope represented the soundtrack in magnetic stripe to create four channels of sound.
Early 1960s :- Ray Dolby ,Founder of Dolby created the original Dolby labs
1967:- The Gratuate became one of the first filims to use an existing ,popular song as part of the soundtrack .
1974:- Then came the highly amplified low frequency sensurround , creating such vibration which rattled a tile or two off ceiling (Dolby Lab Notes )
Mid 1970s :- The Dolby era began (Sergi 14 0. Dolby sound is defined as a set of technological innovation affecting mostly sound reproduction .As early as 1970 Dolby had proven that the ‘Dolby A’ could be successfully applied to the movie optical soundtracks with excellent results (Sergi 19 ). ‘Dolby A’ was application that was used for noise reduction for movies mainly background hiss which would allow soundtracks to extend their frequency
1977 :- Star wars is considered a “breakthrough in both sound production and exhibition .From sound architecture ,saptial awareness, sound texture and detail to mixing ,editing,voice charactersation and physical sound “
1980 :- After Star wars ; The Empire Strikes Back came out ,THX was created one of the first sound copanies to use digital and analogue sound
1993 :- The Digital Theater system (DTS) debuted in Steven Spiedlberg’s Jurassic Park,DTS differed from other digital soundtracks because it had a seperate CD-ROM. In the same year ,Sony created the Sony Dynamic Digital Sound to battle Dolby Digital and DTS
2010:-Dolby ,DTS and SONY were the leader in digital filim sound .Then in 2008 .DTS abondoned cinema sound for financial reasons.Once again ,in 2010 Dolby takes the next step and creates Dolby 7.1 which brought in the two more sound channels for even more sound. The system was debuted in Toy story 3.
Today :- Dolby is the leading pioneer in filim sound . In 2012 D olby came out with a upgraded version of Dolby Surround called Dolby Atmos which was used because of the rise in 3D movies.Dolby Atmos made its debut in The Hobbit : The Desolation of smaug.
