Musical Composition and How its processed
Musical composition, Whenever we listen to a song of our liking, we may wonder how the music is composed. We may think that music composition is simple with few musical instruments, singers and composers around. Yes, we are right to some extent and to know more as to how the music is composed let us look into the aspects of music composition.
Musical composition is art of creating new song and tune according to the mood or situation which may comprises of music for movie may include original baground score which is known to be theme of the movie depending as per the script ,this kind of compositions are also called as situational composition basically when we see a movie specially im talking about particular scene ,so when situational score is given to the scene it enriches the ambience and also keeps viewers pulse up throughout the movie .It becames easy for an individual to connect to particular scene.Composition consists in two things only. The first is the ordering and disposing of several sounds…in such a manner that their succession pleases the ear. This is what the Ancients called melody. The second is the rendering audible of two or more simultaneous sounds in such a manner that their combination is pleasant. This is what we call harmony, and it alone merits the name of composition.
The scale for the notes used, including the mode and tonic note, is important in tonal musical composition. In music using twelve-tone technique, the tone row is even more comprehensive a factor than a scale. Similarly, music of the Middle East employs compositions that are rigidly based on a specific mode (maqam) often within improvisational contexts, as does Indian classical music in both the Hindustani and the Carnatic system.
Composing music
People who practice composition are called composers. In popular music and traditional music, the act of composing, which is typically called songwriting, may involve the creation of a basic outline of the song, called the lead sheet, which sets out the melody, lyrics and chord progression. Composition techniques are the methods used to create music. Skills in composition include thinking of melodies, creating a chord progression to support the melody, writing countermelodies, writing musical notation, music theory, instrumentation, and handling musical ensembles (orchestration). Other skills include extended techniques such as improvisation, musical montage, preparing instruments, using non-traditional instruments, and other methods of sound production.
The musical composition in a classical music context requires the ability read and write musical notation in musical clefs (treble clef, thebass clef, the alto clef, and the tenor clef.). Composers must also understand dynamics (loudness of a note or phrase) and effect notations such as pizzicato.
Musical structure is decided by composer. In classical music, one common form used in pieces is sonata form. This form involves an exposition, development, and recapitulation. The end speaks to the beginning, concluding things, while the development allows for deviations from the norm of the exposition.
Many contemporary songs are organized into sections as well. These sections are usually alternating verse and chorus, often with a bridge before the last chorus. The differing verses will share chord progressions while the chorus is often exactly the same throughout
How Musical compositions get processed.
when we get a theme or a situation depending on that situation and script lyricist writes the lyrics and as per the mood concerned music composer creates a melody line for the words and accordingly he harmonizes the melody and works on structure and arrangements. Sometimes vice versa happens if the composer comes with suitable tune for the script or situation lyricist writes lyrics on that particular tune. Some terminologies used in music structure :-
Verse :-In popular music, a verse roughly corresponds to a poetic stanza because it consists of rhyming lyrics most often with an AABB or ABAB rhyme scheme. When two or more sections of the song have almost identical music and different lyrics, each section is considered one verse.
Pre chorus :-The pre-chorus functions to connect the verse to the chorus with intermediary material, typically using subdominant or similar transitional harmonies
Chorus / Refrain :- The refrain may be considered anything that’s not the verse in a song. And part that contains the hook or title and appears more than once in a song is usually called a chorus.
Bridge:-The bridge is a device that is used to break up the repetitive pattern of the song and keep the listeners attention….In a bridge, the pattern of the words and music change.
Conclusion /Outro :-The conclusion or outro of a song is a way of ending or completing the song
Song can be structured in following way:-
- VERSE—CHORUS–VERSE–CHORUS–BRIDGE–CHORUS—END
- VERSE–PRE CHORUS–CHORUS–BRIDGE–PRE CHORUS/CHORUS
- CHORUS–VERSE–CHORUS–MUSIC–BRIDGE–CHORUS–END
- INTRO–VERSE–VERSE–CHORUS–VERSE–CHORUS–BRIDGE–CHORUS–CHORUS
- INTRO–VERSE–CHORUS–INTRO VERSE–CHORUS–BRIDGE–CHORUS– OUTRO
Example for first verse sets-up the theme of the song with the last line offering a natural progression to the chorus. The chorus contains the main message of the song that is worth repeating. Then another verse where new details are revealed followed by the chorus again. Then a bridge is added which is often shorter than the verse. The bridge must be different from the verse, lyrically and rhytmically, and offer a reason why the chorus needs to be repeated.
Arranging is composition which employs prior material so as to comment upon it such as in mash-ups and various contemporary classical works. The process first requiresanalysis of existing music, and then rewriting (and often transcription) for an instrumentation other than that for which it was originally intended. It often (but not always) involves new supporting material injected by the arranger. Different versions of a composed piece of music is referred to as an arrangement.
